10.11.3 update killed ethernet, and app store can't verify.

Mac Mini, Late 2012, running latest 10.11.3 update (as of feb 27).


I updated this morning, and suddenly the ethernet port won't read that there is a cable in there. (I swapped out cables and ports on the router to test, and tested with other devices using same ports and cables, router is fine.)


After doing a bunch of reading, I've seen that I'm not the only one who experienced an ethernet port issue with this update. I'm not super tech savvy, so I don't know about how to work with these "kext" files. And I don't have a time machine backup (which is fine for me most of the time, because I have my own backup system for important files). I figured I'd just wait it out, and they'd fix it. But...


Now, the app store won't let me download the Numbers app because it can't verify my computer. I did some reading on this as well, and people are saying it also has to do with the ethernet/airport hardware, and something with kext files. I can only assume the update has caused this domino effect.


Is wiping my computer and restarting from an earlier El Capitan the only way to get out of this? Or is there an easy step-by-step way to fix this without a time machine backup?

I have a similar issue. Seems there is a problem with the kernel extension. I get the following system messages:

27.02.16 16:22:42,000 kernel[0]: Kext com.apple.iokit.AppleBCM5701Ethernet is in exclude list, not loadable

27.02.16 16:22:42,000 kernel[0]: Can't load kext com.apple.iokit.AppleBCM5701Ethernet - not found.

27.02.16 16:22:42,207 com.apple.kextd[60]: Failed to load /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleBCM570 1Ethernet.kext - (libkern/common) general/unspecified error.

27.02.16 16:22:42,209 com.apple.kextd[60]: Load com.apple.iokit.AppleBCM5701Ethernet failed; removing personalities from kernel.

I'll try copying the kernel extension from a system where it's working....

The problem is caused by a bug in an automatic software update that was pushed out last night.

If you don't already have a current backup, please back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.

There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.

*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.11 ("El Capitan"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.
