unfortunately none of these suggestions work. that's amazing that apple can't make this work.
Sadly Apple don't have access to Microsoft's software.
Try doing the same thing in a new document in TextEdit on OS X. 'File > Export as PDF' works for both types of link. It is Microsoft that is failing to insert the link into the PDF, not Apple.
You could try Pages if you have that on you Mac. TextEdit also can open Word docs, however the links don't seem to be active for my test Word file.

Pages did keep the links clickable on PDF export when I just tested.

How are you saving the PDF from Word? What app is viewing the PDF?
'File > Save as…' choose PDF for the format. This method keeps links when the PDF is viewed in Preview. This is in an older version of Word (v 12.3.6).
You may be able to 'File > Duplicate' & then save the file as a PDF in newer Word versions, or try holding alt (a.k.a. 'option') in the File menu, a 'Save as…' option may appear.
I think you'll have to use the PC to export. Word on OS X fails to make active links when a link is using a 'display title' that isn't the URL.
e.g.
I think Preview is doing 'data detection' to make the URL clickable. I suspect there are converters that could handle it on OS X, but I haven't searched. Otherwise you may need to edit the link in Word to display the URL
im viewing in preview.
i'm saving as in pdf format, but the links aren't active when pdf is open.
it converts fine on my pc laptop??
Try converting it to a pdf via the Print command.
Try using option click on the hyperlinks, or control click
Option click works for me, but that is a non - standard command.
if i'm trying to get someone to click on a hyperlink, to sell them something, it needs to be EASY. you shouldn't have to hit multiple keys to pull up a link.
sorry.
Not suggesting you should, just trying to get some more info from you, sorry to bother you.
Actually everything except Word can , I just tested with LibreOffice, OpenOffice, Bean and Pages. They all worked as expected, they exported PDF files with functional links.
