Connect MacBook Pro as External Drive

Hi,

I recently bought a 27" iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015). I also own a 15" MacBook Pro (Early 2011).

I understand that this iMac does not support Target Display Mode, but is there a way where I could hook up my MacBook Pro via Thunderbolt cable, and work off of files remotely from there? I know that I can connect to my MacBook as a server, but I just don't think it allows enough speed transfer between the two. Ideally it'd be as if I hooked up my MBP as though it was a thumb drive.

Thanks!

iMac with Retina 5K display, OS X El Capitan (10.11), null
