Q: iPhoto images not displaying

My iPhoto library says that I have 24,518 images, but those images are not displayed - I see only the grey boxes surrounded by dotted lines. However, clicking on individual boxes will reveal an image in full screen mode (this of course is a random exercise as no preview of the image is showing). Also at this point the roll of images on the bottom of the screen consists of endless copies of the first image in the entire library.

 

Can anyone advise how to fix this?

 

I am using iPhoto '11, version 9.2.3 (629.52) on an iMac running OS X Version 10.7.5.
