It would be helpful if you indicated the EXACT model/year of your Macbook and the current OSX.
Try SMC and NVRAM resets:

Then try a safe boot:

Ciao.
IM not sure of the OSX, I haven't used the laptop in a while. And pretty sure it's MacBook Pro 2010. I have tried all that, but it doesn't work.
If you are not certain the model/year of your MBP, you may enter the serial number (located on the bottom) here:
https://checkcoverage.apple.com/
Assuming that we are dealing with a 2010 Macbook, Use the original Snow leopard OSX DVD that came with the MBP and start up the Macbook as if you were reinstalling the OSX.
After the language selection, there should be a menu bar on top of the display.
Click on UTILITIES.
From the drop down menu, click on DISK UTILITY.
Run DISK UYILITY>FIRST AID, VERIFY & REPAIR.
If the disk cannot be repaired, it will have to be replaced.
Ciao.
thanks for your reply. I can't do that because I can't get past they grey loading screen. It has the Apple logo, with a progress bar underneath it, it gets to about half way then it stops. Sometimes the laptop turns off. It is comstantly plugged into battery.
Its a MacBook Pro (13 inch) mid 2009
I just tested on my 2010 MBP and when I insert the Snow Leopard OSX disk into the DVD slot, I hold down the C key and start up the MBP.
There is no progress bar.
Eventually there is a blue screen followed by the language selection menu.
Are you using the original installation disks?
Ciao.

A mid 2009 MBP came with Leopard OSX disks. The same procedure will apply.
Ciao.
