How do I remove a patch completely?

After applying a patch from the library, I want to remove it and have no effect at all on the channel.

Unfortunately, this seems to be impossible. After I go to the "settings" button and click on "reset channel settings" it appears to remove the name of the patch and replace it with the word "settings." But the sound is still effected. There's still a reverb or effect on the channel. I go to MIXER and I see it created some new busses - but turning them down has no effect on ridding the channel of the reverb or whateer that just will not go away.

I see the channel strip now has a BUS assigned to it, but I don't see a bus with that number in the mixer.

I'll admit I'm new to Logic X (formerly used PT) and I'm finding it to be confusing. I see nothing in the manual or on the internet concerning how to remove the patch. How do you get the channel back to its unaffected self?

Thanks.

Ok.. This is because you are using a library patch which is a combination of settings for a channel strip..

To create a blank strip to start with, rather than using the Patch library...follow these steps...

1) Go to Logic Pro X's preferences and turn on ALL the Advanced Tools...

2) Create a new project...

3) Choose the type of track you wish to create (Software Instrument or Audio for example..)

4) In the Create new track dialog box uncheck Open Library and select Empty Channel Strip in the drop down menu...

Now, in the channel strip for the track you just created manually select instrument and FX plugins etc as needed...

Here is a software instrument track example...

The patches do work perfectly... as they are intended to do so....

Its just how you are trying to use/modify them, I suspect, or how you are viewing everything./. and not being able to see all tracks etc... that is causing you the issues...

You can easily modify a patch yourself.. once you understand how everything is being routed and you alter the routing manually

Heres a simple example showing everything involved in a single patch

Personally, I have never had the need to use a preset patch .. as I don't want to be limited by how someone else has configured things to their own tastes and requirements...

Reset Channel Strip is not the same as Reset Patch..... which is why you are having such issues...

If you look carefully at the various routings going on with the Thin Strum patch you will see why it stops working when you reset one of the channel strips...

Thin Strip creates a stacked track... if you dont open the stack then you are actually messing the routing up when you reset the main track... as that track is routed from Bus 1 and not your main inputs...

Open the track stack and you will see that the first stacked track is now the one that is routed from your inputs...

See the following animation....

As an aside...There is one further little trick with fx channel strip settings...

If you create a channel strip and then want to impose a different fx chain for that channel... without affecting the original instrument settings.. you hold down the option key when you go to the channel stip settings button and you will see a range of new opptions that let you do this..

Heres an example...

You are welcome Joe....

Glad I could help...

As to how to learn Logic..(and why at times i can appear smart!) I suggest Edgar's excellent GEM series of PDFs and iBooks....

They are my 'go to' guides for all things Logic these days...

The free one for what's new in LPX 10.2.1 can be found here...

Thanks, but that doesn't seem to work. I've tried selecting "no send" in the SEND field (which is actually check marked) but it keeps coming up "Send" and then sending it.

As for the BUS field, if I select anything other than "bus 8" (which Logic created) I get no sound.

If I close the program and don't save anything it will open with the track unaffected. But if I again apply a patch, it will never go away (or at least part of it never goes away).

Thanks again, This makes me realize the problem was caused by me when I deleting some of the control strips created on the mix panel - the ones that control the output from the effects sends from the different elements of the patches.

I get the feeling now that it's supposed to work in a straightforward way and I just messed things up by experimenting.

I'll create a new test track and I suspect it will work fine. Thanks again.

Thanks. I created a new test document. Well, I see this still does not work at all. "Enable patch merging" is not checked. Here is what happnes:

I record a track and it's called "Audio 1" Well, it sounds pretty good.

I go to the library and add a patch - because I think the concept of patches is pretty cool. Logic immediately RENAMES my track "aux 1" and and assigns the input "bus 1."

I click on the SETTING field and select "reset strip." The name of the patch disappears - but I'm still on "bus 1." And the SOUND of the patch is still there. I go to the mix window and I see it's added a couple of channels, presumably from the effects sends from the former patch. But none of them say BUS 1 (they say bus 3 and bus 4 - what?) They seem to control nothing.

If I select "no input" instead of "bus 1" I get NO SOUND.

So I'm wondering how is this supposed to work?

As I suggested earlier.. Stop using Library patches as they are combinations of all kinds of things including routing to buses, extra FX and so on...

Build your own 'patch' from scratch as i indicated earlier and you wont be subjected to all these 'issues' and how someone else decided to set things up....... and have so much more flexibility to create what you actually need yourself.

Cheers..

Thanks, but I don't believe they all work correctly. I've done some more experimenting, and here's the situation:

When I select most of the patches and then immediately select "reset channel strip" it DOES remove the patch as it is supposed to do - most of the time. But when I select a few of the patches and then immediately tell it to reset the strip it works differently. It renames my "audio 1" track as "aux 1" and applies an effect that can't be removed or controlled.

I tried a lot of patches, and only found a few that seem to have this problem - but unfortunately those were among the first few I ever tried. (Acoustic guitar > thin strum> does not work here).

I suppose I could be doing something that's causing the problem (usually this is the case,ha), but all I'm doing here is creating a new file and then one audio track for test purposes and then selecting patches. That's it. So I see no reason any patch should behave so differently from all the others.

I doubt I'll even use many of these patches, but I wanted to know what was going on. At this point, I'm going to say that certain patches probably cause problems with this version of the program on this 7-year old computer.

Thanks, Nigel, for your responses.

UNBELEIVEABLE! Thanks so much! I have been trying to figure this out for quite a while... I guess I shouldn't have skipped the "stacked tracks" section, ha. I'm actually glad to see the program works because I do like the interface and all the various features that seem to work fine.

But here's the thing, Nigel... Okay, "reset channel strip" is not what I thought it was - but I still see no way to "reset the patch." Once a patch is on there, I see no basic button or action menu that will CLEAR IT. Am I missing some hugely obvious thing?
