The move circle in Activity

I can have a day when I'm not doing so much so in the evening my move circle in the activity might only be halfway around.

If I then switch on the workout app and choose "Other training" and then still be lying on the sofa, but after only about 15-20 minutes my move circle is full.

How can that be? What does it measure differntly when the traing app is active?

Hi

To credit progress towards your daily Exercise goal, the Activity app aims to identify activity that equals or exceeds the intensity of a brisk walk.

During general daily wear, the Activity app relies on your arm motion (measured by the accelerometer) to track movement for the purpose of crediting progress towards the Exercise goal. For the best results, allow the arm on which you are wearing your watch to swing naturally as you move around.

If there are times when you would prefer to record certain activities as Exercise regardless of their intensity level, you can track them via the Workout app using "Other" as the activity type. This will credit one minute of Exercise for each full minute of the workout. This is why you still registered Exercise when running a workout on your watch whilst lying on the sofa.

When tracking a workout using Other as the activity type, Apple Watch also estimates active calories (for your Move goal) based on whichever is the higher of:

- The equivalent of a brisk walk, or;

- Data recorded by the heart rate sensor.

What counts as a brisk walk depends, in part, on your personal information. To check that this has been entered accurately and to update it over time:

- On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > Health > Edit (upper-right).

Calibrating your watch can also help to improve the accuracy of fitness and activity-related estimations.

So even if you are completely inactive whilst recording the workout, you will still be credited with calories at the rate of a brisk walk.

Choosing an activity type tells your watch which sensors to use and also affects how it estimates the results of your workout.

For example: if you choose Outdoor Walk or Outdoor Run, the watch can use data sources including the accelerometer, heart rate sensor and, if you also take your iPhone with you, Location Services (GPS) data (to help estimate your distance and pace).

Some other activities (for example, yoga) may involve significantly different types of movement, so the Other category enables these be recorded using the assumptions described earlier.
