I understand you are trying to import videos from your iPhone 5 into iMovie on your Mac, but the iPhone is no longer being recognized by iMovie. The first thing I would do is unplug the iPhone from the computer, quit the iMovie application, and restart the computer. Then, open iMovie and plug your iPhone into a different USB port on your MacBook Pro.
If the issue persists, take a look at the information in the resources below to troubleshoot the USB connection and/or use alternative methods to import your videos to your Mac:
OS X El Capitan: If a USB device isn’t working
-
Restart apps:
Quit and restart any apps that use the device.
-
Restart your Mac:
Choose Apple menu > Restart.
Verify that the device appears in System Information:
Choose Apple menu > About This Mac. In the window that appears, click Overview, then click the System Report button to open System Information.
Grantana, you can also use the Image Capture application on your Mac to import the videos you want to your computer.

If you are using the Photos app and have iCloud Photo Library enabled, then the full resolution videos can be downloaded to your computer from www.icloud.com.

Can I see all the photos and videos from my Mac on iCloud.com?
iCloud Photo Library will upload photos and videos from your Mac System Library. Photos and videos you keep outside of your System Library won't upload or update across your devices.
You can also select the photos and videos that you want to download from iCloud.com.
Hope that helps ...
