Q: Airport extreme cutting internet TV...Maybe?

Hello,

I recently had Centurylink Prism (broadband) installed in my home.  However, The TV/internet signal would drop once, twice or three times during a TV show.  Instead of calling the tech people at Centurylink, I started problem solving.   I noticed the internet for the rest of the house didn't drop when the TV/internet did.  Thus, checked all the wires,,,nice and tight.  Reset the two modems for centruyLink...numerous times...plus the Airport extreme (even reset to default).    The Prism TV is hooked up via Ethernet through the airport extreme...OK, lets try direct connection and bypassing Airport extreme?  Bingo...TV hasn't dropped all day.   What do I need to change in my Airport extreme settings in order to make the airport extreme work with my Prism box?

I know my Kids are always opening up ports on the modems for xbox, and making sure they have an open NAT. Something similar?  Can't find anything like that on my extreme!

Thanks for the help!!

To help you troubleshoot, we need to know the make & models of the two CenturyLink modems and the model of your AirPort Extreme. How are these devices currently interconnected? That is, are they connected by Ethernet, wireless, or both?

I know my Kids are always opening up ports on the modems for xbox, and making sure they have an open NAT. Something similar?  Can't find anything like that on my extreme!

If they are doing this, then the "modems" are a combination of a modem and a router as a simple modem does not have ports that you can manage. That should also mean that your Extreme should be reconfigured as a bridge otherwise you would have a "Double NAT" condition with two routers connected in series. Finally, unless you know specifically what they are doing, then this may contribute to the issue you are having.

Sorry, I have fibor optic coming in to the house to my Calix 716ge-I..ONT, which is connected to my Modem/router Techinicolor C2100T  via Ethernet.   My Extreme (ME918ll/A)  is connected via Ethernet from the C2100T and the router is off (bridge mode). The Prism box and the PS2 is connected via Ethernet from the Extreme.   I did create a new network..on the extreme for some reason, I guess I could have just extended the other one.

The C2100t..has these ports opened ...TCP 80 3074 3544....UDP 53 88 500 3074 4500.  I am the only one allowed to open ports for the xbox...and I guess I know enough to mess things up.

No ports have been touched on the Extreme.  1Pv6 is set to automatic and native mode.  Share IPv6 connection and block incoming connections are on.  Teredo is off and IPSec is on.

Thanks for the networking hardware updates. Just to make sure I understand the last sentence. Are you saying the Extreme or the C2100T is the one configured as a bridge?

The Prism box and the PS2 is connected via Ethernet from the Extreme.   I did create a new network..on the extreme for some reason, I guess I could have just extended the other one.

You could go either way, but if you want to take advantage of having a "single" wireless network and allow wireless clients to roam between the two routers, then you will want to further configure the Extreme into a roaming network with the C2100T.

    The C2100t..has these ports opened ...TCP 80 3074 3544....UDP 53 88 500 3074 4500.

That would be correct. The C2100T would be the one to open the ports on. FWIW, I have written AirPort User Tips for how to get an "open" status for both the Xbox and PS3. Although it is directed at an AirPort router, it still holds true for non-Apple routers as to how to go about doing so, as far as which ports to open or how to place the game console in a DMZ.

1Pv6 is set to automatic and native mode.  Share IPv6 connection and block incoming connections are on.  Teredo is off and IPSec is on.

Unless your ISP supports IPv6 AND you want to use it on your local network, I would suggest the following settings on the Extreme. Note: You may want to find the equivalent settings on the C2100T as well.

    • AirPort Utility > Select the Extreme > Edit > Internet tab > Internet Options... > Configure IPv6: Link-local only > Update
