music folder in my music folder

Although this question seems to have been asked previously, I think it pertinent to ask it again. Back in September of 2015 my hard drive crashed and, although I had all of my stuff backed up, the tech guy was able to salvage most of my stuff and everything seemed to be ok. But I noticed that, for some reason, I had multiple copies of songs in my library, like 5 and 6 and sometimes 10 copies of the same song. So, I went on a mission. I opened up my music folder and went artist by artist, group by group, including folders like various artists, unknown artists, compilations, and so on, and manually removed every single duplicate. That took until a few weeks ago. So now everything is cleaned up.

My music is stored in a manner similar to my other folders like "my pictures", "my documents", that is, the primary folder is on my desktop. You double click to open it and the folders of all the artists are stored within it, and are all displayed alphabetically. So, if I purchased music from iTunes for a group that I don't already have on my computer, I simply want those artists, with their respect folders, to appear within the general music folder called "music" (my actual folder on my desktop is called "music - shortcut").

However, when I download music from iTunes, those artists are downloaded to a folder inside my desktop "music shortcut" folder, which adequately and confusingly enough is also called "music". Now, the benefit of this is that I can always very quickly find the latest music files that I have downloaded, because they always go into this odd "music" folder. But, me being partly obsessive/compulsive, that will bug me because now the same artist can potentially exist in two places; the main folder where I want everything filed, and this newly added "music" folder from iTunes.

In order to correct the problem, I have to manually open up this weird music folder, and, if it's a group I don't have, simply cut and paste it into the general folder. But if it's a group I already have, I have to cut the album or song, then go find the group or artist, open that file, then paste it. It's a pain.

Now for my question. Is there a way to permanently get rid of this "music" folder that iTunes is making every time that I purchase a song? To help, I have NOT check off "keep iTunes media folder organized" and I do NOT have checked off "copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library". This is because I don't not ever want to have duplicate copies of any song on my computer ever again!!!!! Just the main folder, the group or artist folder with in it, the albums within that, and the songs. My file folder destination is: C:\Users\Derek\Music. Based on this destination, you would think that the artists that are downloaded would be going to the place indicated. But no. It's almost like it's going to C:\Users\Derek\Music\Music, but I don't have it presented that way.

Help please, and please note, I'm 47 years old and not really a tech person. I'm a high school math, science and phys ed teacher but you need to explain everything in simple, easy to follow language with appropriate sentences or I probably won't be able to follow your implicit instructions. I thank you in advance for your assistance.

iTunes' standard folder layout is based on the iTunes Media folder location specified in Edit > Preferences > Advanced. By default, this location is C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media, where the iTunes database, the artwork folders, and other supporting files are also contained within the iTunes folder. This structure looks like this:

User uploaded file

How iTunes locates new additions to your library is influenced both by the "Copy files ..." option in Edit > Preferences > Advanced, and by the method used to add media, as follows:

User uploaded file

If you look at the right-hand column here, you'll see one aspect of the scenario you describe - if you purchase music from the iTunes Store, import it from CD, or add existing files by copying them to the Automatically Add to iTunes folder, they will always end up in <your iTunes Media folder>/Music, even if you have the "Copy files ..." option turned off.

Now, you could force iTunes to put music where you've stated you want them by setting the iTunes Media folder location to "C:\Users\Derek". However, I'd advise against that and suggest that you'll actually find things work better and more reliably if you just follow iTunes' default layout. Does it really matter that music ends up in C:\Users\Derek\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music? If nothing else, following the default layout (and specifically having a "parent" iTunes folder that contains the database file - iTunes library.itl - and the iTunes Media folder) make it much easier to create and maintain a backup of your library as well as to move the library to a new PC. Personally in ten years of using iTunes, and running three separate libraries (two of which are around 1TB in size) I've never encountered a compelling reason to override the default folder layout - as long as I can maintain backups, replicate libraries between systems, and know where to find files/folders in the very rare cases where encounter issues, I don't really care where iTunes stores its data.

Because I have an Android based phone, and I simply drag and drop my entire music collection onto my SD card on my phone, I wanted my files to be as simple as possible. That is why I was trying to get away from the complicated filing system that iTunes uses. It just seems strange that I can't download my songs to EXACTLY where I want them, without some complicated process. Main music folder on my desktop, artists' folders, albums, songs. 3 levels of file folders then the songs. That's it. So, does it really matter, no of course not. But I would like to think that on my own laptop, I have some control over where my files get placed. So you are saying that if I drop the "music" off of C:\Users\Derek\Music, that my new music that I purchased will go EXACTLY where I want it? I'm apprehensive to try this but why not.
