Q: Ethernet port disappears
I'm on a MacBook Pro, Late 2013, running El Capitan 10.11.3.
Just today I went to run a test using my Ethernet adapter rather than my wireless adapter and I could not connect. I've spent over an hour getting to the following state:
- The operating system cannot see the Ethernet port. If I run the System Information report the Ethernet port is not listed. Initially I had the Ethernet port defined in my Automatic location. When I opened it and went to Advanced --> Hardware, I could not see my mac address and the configuration was virtually blank.
- After much research I rebooted with the ethernet cable plugged in and pressed Command + r. When the diagnostics came up I select Network Diagnostics. There I could see my Ethernet card, the mac address, and the assigned IP address. I disconnected the cable and saw the connection go inactive. I reconnected the cable and the connection became active again.
- I've tried resetting NVRAM using Option + Command + r + p but with no success.
Clearly the hardware is functional.
How do I restore the connection to the OS? I've tried to manually add the ethernet adapter, but because the OS cannot see the adapter it is not available to manually add to the Location.
I need help fixing this problem.

Check the other thread, Built-in ethernet vanished, there are lots of information there.
For quick reference, you better check official notes from Apple first.
