Q: Can't connect to router on iMac 7.1. Improper password claimed.

Having finally resolved both ethernet and wifi problems on my new iMac,

I've been trying to resurrect 2007 iMac (also on El Cap). The older machine is ~30 feet away from the

Linksys 54GL router using WPA2, and other devices work nearby. I see signal 35dB above noise using info from

"about this Mac". Still it won't connect: setup assistant says " improper password", merely trying to connect gets message

to "move closer". What's happening? I know password ISN'T wrong. Too far away for ethernet, how can I get some kind of wifi?

Thanks, Richard

iMac (20-inch Mid 2007), Mac OS X (10.7.5)

    Howdy Richard,

If I understand correctly, there's an issue connecting to your Wi-Fi network with your iMac which has OS X El Capitan installed on it. If you haven't already, try taking a look at the Wi-Fi troubleshooting article linked below and using the instructions that it provides to resolve the issue.

    Cheers.

the 54GL is capable of broadcasting over the following protocols

      • IEEE 802.3
      • IEEE 802.3u
      • IEEE 802.11g
      • IEEE 802.11b

the 2007 iMac should support B and G, but in some rare cases I've seen conflicts where one or both of the compatible protocols just won't work.

three possible solutions in this event

    1) use ethernet (if only to determine the router functions with your iMac at some level)

    2) use the guest account broadcast if your router supports it (sometimes it works when all else fails)

    or

    3) factory reset the router, or in some cases firmware update it (despite the interface telling you all is fine and dandy there can be stuff underneath that went bonkers and you won't know about it.)

Thanks for caring Jason and Jimmy,

I gave up on the wifi yesterday, since it wouldn't even connect to an unsecured network. It actually stopped working long ago, in the days of OS X Lion. Concentrating on restoring Ethernet, I 1) restored HD to 2/25/16, before Apple's security update, 2) bought a cheap Linksys range-extender (~$40) from Best Buy. It has an ethernet port to and will fill in some holes in wifi coverage, too.  By a miracle, it all worked fine, with trivial setup of the device. So I'm happy now. Much easier than, say, replacing wifi card or something on logic board.
