Mar 1, 2016 4:58 AM in response to Smoothie1969by Russ H,I suggest that you post this in the Final Cut Studio discussions.
This is the Final Cut Pro X discussion forum and while this application shares the same name as FCP 5, it is completely different.
Depending on whether you have 5.0 (PPC only) or 5.1, there may be a way to install it on a recent Mac. But regardless, even 5.1 will require a work-around and the folks that contribute to the FCS discussions will know.
Good luck.

Mar 1, 2016 8:51 AM in response to Smoothie1969by Shane Ross,You are trying to install 10 year old software on a brand new computer and new OS. It doesn't matter if it's a new copy or no, there have been 5-6 OS updates...and ANY software that's that old would be hard pressed to work, much less install, on the latest OS.

Mar 1, 2016 10:57 AM in response to Smoothie1969by Jim Wanamaker,I seem to recall that it is a problem with the installer which runs on Power PC but not on Intel based Macs.

Mar 1, 2016 11:04 AM in response to Jim Wanamakerby Meg The Dog,Yes, but even if you go trough the machinations of overcoming the installation problem, you are still attempting to run an application on an OS that is light years away from the OS the software was originally designed to run on.
Deciding if using software that may become unstable, erratic, and unpredictable - and which is now completely unsupported by its maker - rests with the OP, but it's hard to understand why someone would want to put themselves through that given all the other pressures of the post production process.

Mar 1, 2016 11:09 AM in response to Jim Wanamakerby Shane Ross,Yes, and here's the solution to that...for people running FCP 6 and 7. FCP 5.0 won't do it no matter what, it was designed for PPC only. FCP 5.1 was the first version to work on Intels, as Meg mentioned.
Final Cut Pro Installation CD doesn't open
,
The software is EXTREMELY old and can't handle any of the new camera or formats out there today. Really only good for DV, HDV and DVCPRO HD. Can't even read ProRes, the default format for the later versions of the app.
Best not to try to keep using this. It's too old.

Mar 2, 2016 4:40 PM in response to Shane Rossby Smoothie1969,Thank you everyone for the help! The reason for the question is we use Final Cut Pro 5 at work and I am new to both Mac and FCP. Looks like I buy an older computer to run the software package!
