Q: Mail does not work at all. Can not perform software updates-El Capitan

Warning...I am not exactly computer literate the it comes to these things but I can follow directions so if anyone can help me, I would be MOST appreciative.

My mail randomly stopped working.

I'm on El Capitan 10.11.3 (I think) and got that information from the app store where it said this needed a software update. But this mail issue does not allow updates to be performed. When I click or wait for "restart," a message appears stating not all of the updates could occur because they were interrupted by mail. It then instructs me to "Quit mail." However, "QUiT MAIL" is greyed out when I go to do just that.

I have the mail icon on the lower toolbar but nothing happens when I click it. It is not importing new emails and there is no way for me to write/send from this account. I came across a few articles online and have tried a couple of things including deleting and reading the account and running "Connection Doctor" which gave me the green light.

Can anyone help? Please.........and thank you!!
