Q: How to recover photos after they've been deleted from camera roll *and* icloud

Hey there

A few hours ago I needed space to take pictures during a show, so I deleted pictures in my camera roll which were taken 10 days ago and were supposed to be on my cloud. (-> After I took them I linked my phone to my mac and imported them on Photos. There were even doubles.) But, tonight, when I opened Photos, for one minute the pictures were there and then they disappeared. I can't find them anywhere : not in my Photo Library, not in the Metadata files of the App, not in my cloud... I tried four different Data Recovery tools, none of them worked.

Is there, by any chance, another way for me to get those pictures back?

As a guess you are using iCLoud Photo Library and

Possibly you do not understand how iCloud Photo Library works

iCloud Photo Library FAQ - Apple Support

ICPL is a service who's entire purpose is to sync libraries - all changes made on any device is made to all devices

As to recovering deleted photos - look in the recently deleted album

    Thank you for your answer!

But when I say I deleted them, I mean that I deleted them "twice" : from the Camera Roll, and from the Recently Deleted album. Usually when I do so, I can still find the pictures when I go to the Photo Library on my Mac.... But not this time... I guess I must have forgot to backup before deleting them. And indeed, I guess I don't completely master the art of the Icloud library!

I´m wondering if there is not a Lost. or Trash. file in Iphones in which I could  find traces of these pictures.

    Thanks again for your answer,

The "Recently Deleted"  album replaces the Trash. It is your safety line against accidental deletion. If you deleted the photos from Recently Deleted, your chances to recover them are gone, unless Time Machine on your Mac made a backup of your Photos Library, before you deleted the photos.

If you are using iCloud Photo Library on your iPhone and your Mac, you must not delete Photos from your iPhone, that you do not want to remove from your Mac's Photo Library as well.  Don#t use iCloud Photo Library, if you do not want the Photos Libraries on your Mac and your iPhone to be identical.

    There is

Since you delete the photos in the recently deleted (the trash) they are gone as you apparently intended

If you are using ICPL (you still have not told us) and if it is set to download originals to your Mac and if your Mac is being backed up regularly then you should have them in a Photos backup on the Mac

Yes I use ICPL and download originals on my Mac, but I don't back up my Mac regularly, so.. Indeed my photos are gone forever. At least i'll never do that mistake again!

Thank you for your answers - now I know how ICPL actually works.

I strongly suggest that you run TimeMachine with the default hourly backup settings - doing a random occasionally backup is playing Russian roulette with your data and losing is messy

Are your photos very precious ones?  Then you could use data recovery software on the mac to recover the photos that have been deleted from your Mac.  Recovery software can retrieve photos from the disk blocks that have not yet been overwritten by new data.

Usually data recovery software has a trial mode, that will show you what can be recovered, before you buy it.  Disk Drill is good at recovering photos.  (http://www.cleverfiles.com/), but there are many other options. Just search the internet for photo recovery.

If you want to use data recovery, you have to stop using your mac immediately. The longer you use it, the more files will be deleted before you can recover them.

Have you log in iCloud.com to check whether the photos exist or not? Or, check your iTunes backup. There are quite a lot of software that are able to do it. Google iFoneTips and check out one from the website. I remember I've seen a post saying about how to preview iTunes backup (you know restoring data from iTunes will erase current files, right?).
