I spoke too soon! Immediately after testing this and finding that it worked, I left town for a week. While away, I tried to access my files but couldn't. After a LOT of searching and working with Apple both in the store and on the phone, I finally got to the bottom of it: the drive was going to sleep, and there was no way to wake it up remotely.
The crux of the matter seems to be that the Rugged Raid drive requires AC power when connected via USB. Once it goes to sleep (as it should) it cannot be woken up by the AEBS because it doesn't "see" the power coming from the AEBS when a request comes in ... all because the drive is getting its power from the wall.
I've tested it out with a couple of other portable drives (1TB and 2TB) that draw power via USB, and it works perfectly even after sitting idle for more than a day. So the trick to making this work appears to be to use a drive that's capable of being powered via USB.
Apple support mentions that you can connect a single USB drive to the port on the AirPort router, or multiple drives if you use a powered USB hub. No mention is made of Raid type drives, which I interpret to mean that RAID is not supported by the firmware on the USB port on the AirPorts.
Uses for the USB port of AirPort Time Capsule, AirPort Extreme, AirPort Express - Apple Support
In my experience, Raid type drives are not recognized by the USB port on the Time Capsule or AirPort Extreme.
Even if the RAID drive was recognized, you probably would NOT ever want to connect a RAID array to the port.
The reason for this is that the port is USB 2.0 only.......and due to processor limitations within the AirPort router, the port runs at about half the speed of a USB 2.0 port on a computer. So, things would be incredibly slow with this type of setup.
Thanks for the reply.
I know this is an old thread but it popped up when I was looking for help with a similar problem, and I hope my solution helps others.
I have a 4TB LaCie Rugged Raid (Thunderbolt/USB3) full of photos. Wanting to access these photos remotely, I plugged the drive into my Airport Extreme Base Station but trying to connect through the network kept giving me an error message: "The operation can’t be completed because the original item for “LaCie” can’t be found."
After trying all of the suggestions I found online (to no avail) I disconnected the drive and plugged it directly into my MacBook Pro to confirm (a) that it worked when connected directly and (b) that it was in fact formatted as HFS+ (it was).
As soon as I plugged the drive into my MBP, the LaCie Desktop Manager app popped up. I went into the preferences and unchecked all of the options (so the app won't do anything automatically). I moved the drive back over to the AEBS and voila ... everything works perfectly.
Hope this can help someone some day!
