SL 10.6.8 os won't connect to the app store.

I have a 2009 iMac and it will not connect to the app store for the computer. it just says

'Cannot connect to the app store" it doesn't say anything about no internet being present (which there is). However it does connect to the app store on my iTunes. help would be greatly appreciated.
