iPod is "disabled" and cannot connect to iTunes.

My iPod's screen says "iPod is disabled" "connect to iTunes". When I try erasing my iPod by doing the recovery method, it just says that my iPod needs to be unlocked to connect, which I can't do since it doesn't allow me to type a pass code. Help?!

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

I have already tried that. The only method that I would be able to do is the recovery mode. So I connect my iPod to my Windows PC via USB. Then, I open iTunes. iTunes gives me a message saying "iTunes could not connect to the iPod touch "Ryan's iPod Touch" because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the iPod touch before it can be used with iTunes." with the options "More Information", "Try Again", and "Cancel". I hit cancel, and then restart my iPod holding down the power and home buttons simultaneously until the white Apple logo appears on the screen. When the iPod turns back on, it goes right back to the "iPod is disabled" "connect to iTunes" screen.
