ipod shuffle battery will not charge

When I charge my 4th gen shuffle, the light won't go on, nothing happens. The computer (Mac) will not recognize that something has been plugged in. Battery is dead. I tried plugging the ipod into an adapter for the wall, and even then there is no charge.
