error loading media, file could not be played error message when playing video online in safari

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro, running Mac OS X 10.7.5. I used to be able to go online to PBS video and watch movies online. However, just recently I got the following message after I clicked on the PLAY icon: "Error loading media, file could not be played." I CAN watch the videos on Chrome. I have not downloaded any software updates recently. Can anyone help?

Hi bud,

I found the solution, it worked with me!

Very easy.
Step 1: click on wifi icon and open network location

Step 2: click on the internet you use ( wifi, ethernet, whatever), and click on advanced setting ( right on the bottom)

Step 3: Click on TCP/IP

Step 4: On IP6 you choose 'only link local'

OK OK, refresh and it worked

My Mac is in Dutch so it could be have a other name in English.

I have encountered the problem of the message "Error loading media File could not be played" when using my Macbook Air to sign into PBS Passport library. In spite of sending feedback to PBS, no help. So my workaround is to go down to the timeline of the video at the bottom of the screen and click just inside the beginning of the timeline...just a second or two....and then the video plays. I have no idea why the click of the "play" arrow results in the error message. I don't know if it's PBS or Apple??? And I probably never will. But at least i can watch the video now.

I have exactly the same problem, running Safari 9.1 on 3 different platforms (Macbook Air, Macbook Pro, iMac).

It is easily replicated by trying to watch any video on PBS, e.g. http://www.pbs.org/show/newshour/.

I also can view these videos on Chrome. The troubleshooting steps in the response by jason269 have no effect and

are largely irrelevant. I would be interested if a "Community Specialist" can replicate the problem, which is

obviously robust.
