Q: Both the ethernet and wifi connections on iMac are dead

Hello,

Tricky problem. Last monday afternoon (29-Feb) my iMac was communicating normally via ethernet to the internet. Next afternoon (1-Mar) it wasn't communicating at all via ethernet or wifi. I've spent the last day trying various options to fix my incommunicative iMac.

1) The system report shows both the ethernet card and wifi are up and running.

2) The prime suspect was the "Incompatible Kernal extension Configuration data" version 3.28.1  My iMac reports that I have the fixed update version 3.28.2

3) I've run Apple's suggested fix If the Ethernet connection on your Mac stopped working recently If the Ethernet connection on your Mac stopped working recently - Apple Support to no effect. Still no communications.

3.1) Also ran the AppleKextExcludeList_10_1.pkg script to no effect.

4) Tried to do a Time capsule restore plugging the time capsule directly into the iMacs ethernet port. But the iMac can see the TC but can't talk to it!

5) equally, with wifi, the iMac wifi can see our airport express wifi network but can't talk to it.

I'm running out of ideas???

I'm running OSX El Capitan 10.11.3 on a 27" late 2012 iMac.

Suggestions please.

    Further information.

Have just tried a full OSX reinstall. No effect, still no ethernet or wifi access to the internet.

We have 4 other IOS devices and a macbook all happily talking via an Airport express to the internet. The odd man out is the iMac.

    Maybe I have a i-broke-iMac??

    Suggestions?

Have just tried a full OSX reinstall.

So you did have Internet access in Recovery mode?

    Linc,

Curiously, yes I seem too but it was dreadfully slow. However, it may have grabbed the OSX install from a cached area on the HD so I can't be sure.

No joy after the erase and reinstall. The Time capsule restore took 1.5 days when it should take 4 hours.

I have since spoken with Apple and to their credit they agree that I have a hardware fault effecting both the ethernet & wifi. So Im taking it into the Apple shop and I'm assured that this repair will not cost me anything. Impressed.
