Q: Preview stop opening on login

How do I stop Preview opening each time I login to my iiMac?

It opens with the window "About Downloads" and I have to close it  each time.

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), OS X El Capitan (10.11)

    Hi colinbp,

If you have something (Preview) opening each time you log into your iMac, please see if there is something in your Login Items like Preview or an image opening in Preview.

OS X El Capitan: Open items automatically when you log in

You can have apps, documents, folders, or server connections open automatically whenever you log in to your Mac.

    Add or remove automatic items

    1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.

    2. Select the user, then click Login Items.

    3. Do one of the following:

      • Click the Add button below the list on the right, select a document, or folder, then click Add.

      • Select the name of the item you want to prevent from opening automatically, then click the Remove button below the list on the right.

      • If you don’t want an item’s windows to be visible after login, select Hide.

Note:   Hide does not apply to servers, which always appear in the Finder after login.

Temporarily prevent items from opening automatically when you log in

If you see the login window, press the Shift key while you click the Log In button, then release the Shift key when you see the Dock.

If you don’t see the login window, restart your Mac, hold down the Shift key when you see the progress bar in the startup window, then release the Shift key after the desktop appears.

It could also be Resume, where previously opened apps may re-open.

Automatically re-open windows, apps, and documents on your Mac - Apple Support

Please let us know what you find.
