Q: Triangle with ! inside iPod Touch/ Reconnecting

I just connected my iPod touch to the Macbook to charge it. I also started to update the software to the next available version. When I did this, a notification popped up on the laptop and I (not thinking about it) exed out of it without even reading it. As soon as I did that, a triangle with an exclamation mark appeared next to the iPod connected logo on iTunes, and then it disappeared along with the iPod logo that gives you the option to disconnect the iPod.

So, two questions:

1) Does that triange/exclamation mark mean I might have done damage to my iPod? What does it mean?

2) How can I safely eject my iPod now that there is no option to do so in iTi?

iPod touch (5th generation), iOS 9.2.1
