Airport Extreme and Cox Internet IPv6 Problem

This is a notification to others as well as a question:

I have Cox Cable High Speed Internet at several locations using an Airport Extreme 3GB connected as a router to the Cox cable modem.

For more than a week we would regularly find in the morning that the outside connection to the internet DNS servers were lost. We called Cox several times, and they performed the usual reset of router and modem and things seem to work for a while. But the next day gone again.

They came out and replaced the hookups, I I had to buy a new cable modem and replaced a digital switch. Each time things seemed to work for a while.

I thought about replacing the Airport Extreme (as I read others had done in a similar situation to no avail).

After much frustration, I started to search for Airport Extreme and DNS and found similar tales.

After several unproductive calls with Cox Internet first tier support, I finally reached a tier who acknowledged that Cox was rolling out IPv6 and was having a problem with Airport Extreme Routers. They said Apple was working on it and gave me a number to call at apple router support. Unfortunalely the number they gave was no longer valid.

I persisted and eventually got to Apple support and indeed they knew of the problem and said Cox was working on it.. But there was a temporary fix - and that was to turn off iPv6 on the airport extreme (more precisely (internet > Internet Options > Configure Ipv6 : Link-Local Only).

For now this seemed to stop the overnight drop that seems to happen between 12:00 AM and 2:00 AM. From experience I dont think its really an IPV6 compaibility issue, but how the router responds to some sort of reset signal/test signal that the service does in the early morning.

So the question is - does anybody know for sure whats going on or who is really working on this. From my perspective both camps think its the other's problem. BTW - Ive read about others with Non Apple routers chasing something similar.

It is in "link local" - still using it, but I spent some time also setting it to iPv6 in "auto" to se if maybe the 7.7.7 firmware update had solved it.

I'm not sure what the extent of the drops are. The modem indicator lights show it is working and connected to the internet, but on the Airport Utility, it shows the modem disconnected, orange light and not ability to connect. Also my Apple TV disconnects (routed through the Airport Extreme) - most times it is resolved by resetting the Airport and sometimes both the modem and Airport.

Can you tell me what a "CM MAC" is and I will tell you - I went to art school 😉

As an aside, it is dropping less this past day - instead of every like 15-20 mins, now a couple of times day....

Thanks.

Ah, I figured it out... Cable Modem MAC!

On the bottom it says: HFC MAC ID: 306023CEB6C6

Two of the log errors -

If it was still happening with the "link-local" setting applied, your issue is probably not related to IPv6 which is what this support thread has revolved around. I pulled up your modem but nothing jumped out as being abnormal. Best thing I can tell you is to call Cox support next time you notice it happening, before you reboot anything. Sorry I can't be more help.

Thanks for even taking the time to help!

I did call Cox when it was happening - they said the modem was fine, had me connect my MacBook directly to the Cable Modem, and it was fine - no drops... when I went back to the Airport & Modem, it kept happening again.

So they felt it was an issue with the Airport... But who knows with Cox.

Thank you again.

Has Cox had a relapse? I was on this thread back in March when the Cox/1pv6/Airport problem was first identified. When I last posted in May, all was working well here in Williamsburg, VA with default Apple settings and Cox DNS. I was receiving 10/10 and 19/20 on the two tests (Three posts on May 25, p. 13 of this thread.). Total connection reliability. 🙂

Since then all has seemed well, except I started noticing some wonkiness again this week. Better now, but when I do the two tests I now receive 9/10 ("appears your ISP has no access to the 1pv6 internet") on one and 17/20 on the other.

Is Cox having a relapse, or have their been new developments since May? (I have reviewed this thread, but may have missed something important.)

I thought this was over, but apparently not. Will appreciate any comments.

You can add me to the list. I'm on Time Warner with a factory-refurbished 6th Gen Airport Extreme. I was experiencing slow Internet and my Weather Underground uploads were dying after only a few minutes. I disabled IPv6 Sharing using the iOS Airport Utility and, after the base station restarted, my connection was speedy again and the weather data uploads are still going strong after more than 17 hours.

I live in Gainesville, FL and have Cox Communications, as well. I'd been having problems with my 2 year old modem/wi-fi router and purchased a new Arris SB6183 and AirPort Extreme earlier this week. I installed the modem and confirmed the new hardware with Cox and have full connectivity through the modem. When I connect the AirPort (running firmware 7.7.7.7) I get nada. The green light on the front is lit, but no connectivity. I made the recommended switch to Link-Local and still nothing. Any suggestions would be most appreciated!

How exactly did you do this? If you had your computer connected to the modem when you notified Cox, then your modem "associated" itself with the computer.

Cable modems "remember" the device to which they are first connected, and they will ignore any other device that subsequently connects to the modem.

So, if you had your computer connected to the modem when you called Cox (or went online) to authorize the modem......the modem won't communicate with the AirPort Extreme at all.

If this is what has happened, then you will need to make the modem "forget" your computer, so that it will associate with the AirPort Extreme. Post back for more details if you need them in this case.

Another possibility here is that while the Arris modems are good products, as are the Apple routers, the modems and AirPorts just don't seem to get along very well together for some users.

Disconnect the modem from power for about half a minute and plug it back in. Then do the same with the Airport Extreme. Then shut down the computer with Airport Utility and restart it. Then, use Airport Utility to set up the Airport Extreme. Hopefully you will find this will make it connect.

I know the restart of the computer with the Airport Utility you used to set up the Airport Extreme may not seem intuitive, but it works. A Cox helpline person advised me to do this when I had a connectivity problem, and I was surprised when it did work
