Q: Airport Extreme and Cox Internet IPv6 Problem

Yes... I agree that NEITHER the Link-Local or the Google DNS solutions seem like permanent, natural solutions... just make-do-for-now measures.

I hope that when things clear up (soon, hopefully), this forum and/or even a more formal and broad communication will be disseminated as to what we should do as a permanent remedy.

No, I've been using Google DNS for years. It is fast and reliable.

DNS is essentially the phonebook of the Internet. Its job is to resolve easy for humans to remember web site addresses like apple.com to their hard to remember IPv4/IPv6 addresses so that apps like our web browsers know where to connect to.

There are a number of public DNS services out there and you can choose to use anyone of them.

Here is a current list with there IPv4 addresses. You will need to visit their sites to determine whether they also provide IPv6 DNS services as well. I know the popular OpenDNS does.

I have a situation I do not understand nor can i figure out

I have made all the changes to utilize the Google DNS and checked and rechecked them

In my office I have a Time Capsule serving as my main router, next to it I have an iMac connected via Ethernet., when I run test iPV6 it tells me no iPv6 address connected and gives me a score of 0/10

I have extended my network wirelessly with an Extreme in my other office and I have a MacBook Air connected to it when I run the iPv6 test it finds a iPv6 address and gives me a score of 10/10

Any suggestions

On the iMac make sure that the Network settings for IPv6 in System Preferences is set to "Automatically." Once set to Automatically the iMac should assign itself an IPv6 address and tests at http://test-ipv6.com/ should be 10/10.

That was my problem I had forgotten to go into network and make the change on the iMac, realized it, made the change and ran a test then I saw your response..all OK now, when I thought I had checked everything, I didn't , changed the macBook but forgot to do it on the iMac

I should also point out that you should make sure that the IPv6 Firewall is turned on. The default setting is for it to be activated so this is just for people who may have accidentally turned it off.

I experienced the intermittent disconnect of my modem for the past two days now, including during critical hours (the opening of the stock market!).  The third time I called a lady at Cox gave me the Link-local only solution.  She said that there are no ipv6 websites in the entire world and that it is useless to have ipv6 capability.  She said to leave the Link-local setting indefinitely.  Basically she suggested that Apple had gone too far, too fast ahead of the rest of the world with ipv6 setting and that there was no point to leaving my Time Capsule set on the ipv6 setting.

(By the way, to answer another question posed here, she said that there was no need to change the setting on my three Airport Extremes that are in my network - only on the router that is hardwired to the modem.)

I changed to link-local and left it like that for a few hours.

However, I decided to revert to ipv6 and go with the "Google DNS solution" and the test at http://www.test-ipv6.com/ is all good 10/10, however this test simply states that I am ready for ipv6 not that I am connected to any.

By the way, I have the Cox Premier Internet service (advertised up to 150 Mbps down, 10 Mbps up), and I don't ever get that 150, I get about 110-115 down but around 13-14 up on the hardwired iMac and anywhere from a quarter to all of that via WiFi depending on how far from the Time Capsule I am in the wireless network.  These are all the latest Time Capsules and Airport Extremes all 802.11ac - I have one TC and three AP Extremes connected together in one network.

I did not notice any difference in speed before, while set on Link-local or now under the "Google DNS solution."

I think I need to complain to Cox about why I don't get the 150 mpbs though; I didn't realize I was supposed to get that - I thought I was only supposed to get 100 which is why I did not even notice the shortcoming.

I Upgraded to ultimate cox which on our hard wired iMac is 350 down and 30 plus up.

I had to disconnect my expresses as they are 100 meg down max,  the extreme from an adjoining room is 130 down. 

I phoned Cox and they upgraded the firmware in my DOCSIS 3 modem, now I am getting average 139 mbps down / 14-15 mbps up  --- still not the 150 advertised but she said that it is "up to 150" not guaranteed 150, which come on, what does that mean?  1 mbps could also satisfy the term "up to 150."

Anyway that's where I am at now.  Will advise whether this Google DNS solution actually keeps me from getting disconnected.

Still issues. With this Google DNS solution, all lights show green on airport utility, wifi works on iPhones and iPads but on an iMac connected via wifi cannot load any websites (get a took too long to load - this site can't be reached error - check proxy and firewall settings (I have no proxy or firewall running)) even though on that iMac network diagnostics all green and says that Your internet appears to be working correctly. IPv6 is set "automatically" on this iMac.

Restart of this iMac no effect.

CromeYellow, thanks for your feedback. Strange that only the iMac is continuing to having problems.

If you don't mind checking a few other things.

Go to System Preferences > Network >Advanced > Proxies

Make sure none of the protocols are selected in the configuration list.

Go to  System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Firewall

If the Firewall is enabled (good idea by the way) select "Firewall Options"

Make sure that "Block all incoming connections" is unchecked

If this has no beneficial effect on your iMac and you are willing to indulge us a little bit more set only the iMac IPv6 network settings to link-local. This will effectively disable IPv6 on the iMac only. Observe if your iPhones and iPads continue to work normally using IPv6.

Of course if you continue to observe bad network behaviour, even on the iMac, then revert your AirPort router to link-local until a more permanent solution is found.

Changing to Google DNS will NOT resolve issue. Change to "local link only" on Airport Extreme....it will NOT impact speed. I have a Arris SB6190 (Docsis 3.0) modem, Airport Extreme with Cox Premier service - my speeds 300+ Mbps down and 30+ Mbps up.

In many cases Cox will not turn up your internet speed when you get a Docsis 3.0 Modem without you asking AND confirming. The should do it automatically when they provision your new 3.0 modem...BUT you can not count on it. So, call, verify, confirm . I have Premier, with Arris SB 6190 Modem, getting 300+ down and 30+ up.....but I had to call - even after provisioning new modem....

Hi @gino_cerullo - Yes, I have tested using Google DNS.....still had issues.....changed Extreme to local link only.....no issues for over 90 days....
