Is this a different password than my apple id password?
Yes.
You have set an encryption password on your iTunes backup. You cannot reset it without knowing what it is (as is true with pretty much all passwords in the Apple world).
Here is more information:

Mar 2, 2016 9:07 PM in response to Jdp19by sberman,You can determine beyond question whether your backup is encrypted as follows:
In iTunes, use iTunes' menu to go to iTunes > Preferences > Devices (Mac) or File > Preferences > Devices (Windows). Look at the row showing the iPhone's backup. If it displays a padlock, it's encrypted. Otherwise, it is not.

Mar 2, 2016 9:13 PM in response to sbermanby Jdp19,That is the case. However if it did ask me for a password I would have used my Apple ID password. Guess I'm stuck. Thanks for your help!

Mar 2, 2016 9:20 PM in response to sbermanby Jdp19,Another question for you. Would I have put that password in when I last backed it up or would it have been entered previously

Mar 2, 2016 9:28 PM in response to Jdp19by sberman,Certainly you would have set up the password when you turned on encryption. Perhaps you did that some time ago, as encrypted backups save more data (e.g., passwords, health data) than unencrypted backups.
I assume you would need to enter that password every time you access the backup (e.g., to overwrite it).
