Can't access my photos anymore from iphoto since updating to El Captain

To use iPhoto on El Capitan, update iPhoto to version 9.6.1.

if you did not update before the El Capitan upgrade, see: Barney's User Tip:   Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store##

The upgrade to El Capitan just removes the iPhoto icon from the Dock. Have you looked in your Applications folder, if iPhoto is still there?

photos didn't merge to Photo app, how do I restore them? Will a different operating system fix this?

You can open the iPhoto Library in Photos  by dragging the iPhoto Library onto the Photos icon in the Dock.

It requires, that the library is on a compatible drive.  The library needs to be on a locally mounted drive, not a NAS, and the file system needs to be MacOS Extended (Journaled). The drive must not be a Time Machine drive.

Which iPhoto version created your iPhoto Library.  If the iPhoto version is iPhoto 7.1.2 or older, you have to prepare the iPhoto Library with iPhoto Library Upgrader.    iPhoto '11: About the Library Upgrader

No I did not update to newer version, my version for iphoto was 8.1.2. Yes it was was removed from my dock but also  when I searched for it in my applications file, it had a circle with a strike through it (like a stop symbol) and would not open.

I can't open iphoto at all - so probably won't be able to open the iPhoto library to drag into Photos.

I tried Barneys tips - but couldn't seem to get the "install" tab for iPhoto to show up in purchases.

Not sure what else to try, appreciate your help.

    Thanks

Choose Home from the Finder's Go menu, double-click Pictures, and drag the iPhoto library from there.

Since you are so far behind on upgrading you can not upgrade iPhoto - your only choice is to user Photos

If your iPhoto library did not migrate drag it to the Photos icon in the dock and migrate it

Then you will not be able to upgrade to a compatible iPhoto version. The upgrade from iPhoto 8.1.2 to 9.6.1 is a paid upgrade and not a free update, but  the App Store does no longer sell iPhoto. But you do not need a working iPhoto version to open the iPhoto Library in Photos.

When I drag across it states "none of these files can be imported to you Photo's library." However when I double click on iPohot library icon another message comes up.... "Swtich libraries ' Do you want to switch the current Phto Library from "Photo Library" to iPhoto Library?" cancel or switch....... will my photos be restored if I select switch?

    Thanks

Are you dragging the iPhoto Library icon? That should work.

However when I double click on iPohot library icon another message comes up.... "Swtich libraries ' Do you want to switch the current Phto Library from "Photo Library" to iPhoto Library?"

Click switch.  If your iPhoto Library is readable, that should work.

If not, where is your iPhoto Library stored? Is it in your Pictures folder or on an external drive?

It won't allow me to drag the file.

Also I did try to switch, however I've attempted like 3 times now but it gets to 24% (everytime!!) and then doesn't progress! It doesn't fail, it just cancel or anything, it almost freezes... but always at 24%.... weird.

I saved the pics probably a year ago on a hard-drive - but I havent checked to see if they're still on there. However, I was dragging it from  the Pictures folder... accessed from the homescreen tab Go > Home > Pictures > iPhoto Library

Sorry, I meant.... it doesn't cancel and doesn't even freeze... it's just stagnant at 24%

How large is your iPhoto Library?  For a large iPhoto Library it can take hours to migrate the library without any visible progress. let it run.

The migration can get stuck however, if you do not have enough free storage on your system drive.  The conversion of the library needs temporary plenty of storage.

Are any error messages or diagnostic messages in the Console window?  Launch the Console.app look if there are messages that might relate to Photos.

Does the size of the Photos Library in your Pictures folder change or the size of this library also stuck at the same value?
