Q: I cannot delete old photos on my iPad version 8.1.3. What shall I do?

I have an iPad version 8.1.3 from April 2012. I am now told that the capacity is full. I then tried to delete a lot of old phots from 2012, 2013 and 2014, but there is no rubbish bin, so I do not know how to proceed. What shall I do?

How did the photos get on  the iPad ? If they were synced from a computer you can't delete them directly on the iPad, you need to reconnect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and use its Photos tab in iTunes to change your photo sync selection and resync. To delete all synced photos try selecting and syncing just an empty folder

These photos may be ones you have synced/added to the iDevice using iTunes on the Mac/PC. To get them off the iDevice, you'll need to sync them off using iTunes again. Photos synced to an iDevice using iTunes cannot be removed from the device itself. Before syncing the photos off of the device, make sure you back them up if you need them.

    Follow the instructions here:

Sync photos from your computer to your iOS device using iTunes - Apple Support

Many thanks for your response. This also applies to the response from SergZak.

The photos were originally downloaded direct from my camera (Canon) to the iPad without involving ITunes. So I am not quite sure how to proceed from here.

Any further thoughts would be gratefully received.

What album are they in ? If Camera Roll or an Imported album then you should be able to delete them directly on the iPad

They are in the Photo album. It may be that when the Photo album was introduced by Apple, replacing Iphoto, they forgot to transfer the ability for users tp delete all photos?

They are in the Photos app on the iPad, but what album(s) are the photos in in the app ? If you select the Albums tab, bottom middle of the app, what albums do they appear in ?

It's never been possible to delete photos that were synced from a computer, directly in the Photos app

Many thanks. The photos appear in an album called: Events from My Mac. This is not an album I have created myself, but it hs been created by the Ipad. The photos are also on my Apple IMac and my MacBook Pro.

It is just annoying, that these photos take up so much space on my Ipad, that I may have to buy a new one.

That implies that you've synced those photos from your Mac to your iPad. To delete them, connect the iPad to your Mac and select it in your Mac's iTunes, and use its Photos tab to change your photo sync selection :

    device iTunes 12 photos.jpg

To remove all photos that you synced from your Mac, try selecting syncing just an empty folder/album on that tab

Many thanks. That sounds good. I will work on that to-morrow. It is late.
