accessing Photos from iDVD

I enjoy making slideshows of my photos, then Movies, to be burned to DVD as a permanent copy to view anywhere. Up until now I have had good success. It has been some time since I last did a project, and have since upgraded from iPhoto to Photos. Now my media browser in iDVD won't show Photos. There are also no updates for iDVD, to make it compatible to newer photo software.

It is unlikely, that iDVD will be updated. It had not even been updated for the release of iLife '11, several years ago.

You can still use iPhoto, if you update to version 9.6.1. Then you may want to import the photos you want to use with iDVD to iPhoto. Or export the photos from Photos to a folder on the Finder.

You could also create the slideshows Photos and export them as a video from Photos, then import this video into iDVD to burn the disk.

Export the slideshow out of Photos as a QT movie file via the Export button in the upper right hand corner of the toolbar. Select 480p as the format.

Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.

Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:

Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.

To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.

Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

Thank you to Leonie, Larry, Toad. All good answers, but that wasn't the problem. iDVD Media Browser has Audio, Photos, Movies. All work except Photos. Often I prefer to use still images rather than video clips for Title page. Has worked good until upgrading. I assume the software is not programmed to interface with the newer Photos. Can't find any way to update Permissions or whatever. It's just disappointing when you have something that works well, but with all the new changes from Apple they no longer work right.

iDVD will never be compatible with Photos. So you'll have to export to the desktop and import from there.

However, one can create an iDVD Import folder on your hard drive and drag it into the Media/Photos window in iDVD. Export your photos to that folder and they will be available from the Meldia/Photos window in iDVD:

That is, because the new Photos for Mac application has been built for Mac OS X Yosemite and newer MacOS X versions, that are using different frameworks to share media than previous macOS X versions. Older applications have been compiled for different versions of MacOS X that do not support the new MacOS X features. You will have the same problem with Office 2011 for example. It is not likely that Apple will update iDVD, since it is no longer developed and sold. by Apple.

This is kind of what I assume is the problem, and which I lament because it is not necessary. However, thanks for the suggestion, I will try it at my earliest convenience. I have noticed that in the last 2 years, with all the changes in Apple programming (great ideas but not always the best all-around), that one must find "work-arounds". It has meant a lot of wasted hours redoing what had already been done before, but eventually it gets back to where I can get the job done again.
