Q: Traveling iPad video editing with iPhone (and GoPro?)

I will soon be traveling around Europe for a year, going from hostel to hostel and relying on the included WIFI (which may be sparse or non-existent at times).  While doing this I want to create & upload videos for a YouTube Vlog (video log).

I am hoping I can do this using an iPad instead of a MacBook Pro for the following reasons:

  1. I don't want to spend a lot of time editing videos while I'm traveling -- I would rather spend that time enjoying the experience.  BUT I still do want to edit my videos as I travel.  The iMovie app (on iPad) seems to be a quick & easy workflow.... especially when compared with full-fledge, professional video editing software such as Adobe Premiere.  Perhaps that's just my experience.... and maybe the touch screen.... but it was a breeze to edit videos using iMovie.
  2. iPad ~ $1,000   vs  top of the line MacBook Pro  ~ $3,000
  3. Also, if my stuff gets stolen while I travel...   a lost iPad wouldn't be as expensive to replace as a lost MacBook Pro.

Hardware I am planning to use:

  • Video Editor:  iPad Air 2   (or possibly iPad Pro.... if it's not too big)
  • Video Capture:
    • iPhone 6s  (use most of the time)
    • GoPro HERO4 Black   (use for action, attached to my chest or my head)
  • Wireless Harddrive.
    • I figure this will allow me to free up space on the other devices listed above, once I'm done editing video files.

Important Note:  I will not be able to rely on the internet always being available!  (Or fast for that matter.)

For the reason I cannot rely on any Cloud Service to move the files between my devices.

Questions (given my situation above) are:

  1. Moving video files from iPhone to iPad is easy with AirDrop... but how can I move 4K video I record on the GoPro over to the iPad?  (I will not have a computer or internet available.)
    1. Can I use "Air Drop" to send from GoPro to iPad?
    2. Some kind of cable (apple camera to ipad) ?
    3. Something else I'm not thinking about?
  2. Am I better off just getting a MacBook Pro and using iMovie on there where I have access to the file system?   Instead of having an iPad?  (I just thought an iPad would be a simpler, lighter, less expensive, more zen-like experience for video editing while traveling.
  3. Or if I forgo the GoPro .... then perhaps an iPad and iPhone combo would be a good/easy solution for use while traveling??

I would really love some thoughts on this... I am going to be traveling SOON!  (at the end of this month)

And yes I realize a new iPad Air 3 will probably be released on March 21st... so I will wait for that if I'm going for the iPad Air size instead of the iPad Pro size.
