Mar 4, 2016 3:35 AM in response to kimmy1968by Kenichi Watanabe,That message, if it said "format" probably came from Windows (not iTunes). The iPod's storage may have data corruption, and Windows cannot connect to it (which also prevents iTunes from seeing your iPod). Try putting the iPod into Disk Mode.
Putting iPod into Disk Mode - Apple Support
If the iPod goes into Disk Mode, run iTunes and connect iPod. If iTunes picks it up, it may prompt you to do a Restore with a message about "recovery." The Restore erases the iPod (which "formats" it), reinstalls its software, and sets it to default settings. If the Restore completes, you can sync your music back from your iTunes library.
If the iPod does not go into Disk Mode or the Restore fails, your iPod may have a hardware problem, such as a faulty hard drive.

The iPod classic isn't able to restore from its own settings menu.
Take a look at Re: Corrupt iPod classic and see if anything there helps.
