bought 3rd gen apple tv with out a remote. cant get remote for a few days. anyway I can set this up

I'm afraid you are in a chicken and egg situation regarding the remote app. You can't use it until you have set up the Apple TV for which you need a remote.
One option which has been suggested by others is to use the ciderTV application for the Mac.
