Is there a way to type superscripts and subscripts ?

I'm trying to find a way to type superscripts and subscripts at the same time in order to type chemical equations. I can do the superscript and subscript separately but I can't figure out how to do them both.

Also while I'm here is there a way to type fractions or other mathematical equations?

Download the free MathType trial. With that launched first, the Pages Insert menu will now have an active MathType menu item, from which you can type equations. At the end of 30 days, that MathType trial will turn into MathType Lite, and still function for you.

In Pages, you will have to type out the entire molecular formular (e.g. C8H10N4O2) and then for individual atoms, apply your font baseline corrections. You have keyboard shortcuts for those, as found in the Format menu : Font menu : Baseline menu. MathType may help with this too.

MathType works within Pages in the way Viking has described, and has a template that will apply both a subscript and a superscript to the same base -- something like this:

You'll also want to set your style definitions in MathType (Style menu > Define) to non-italic variables. This option is set to italic by default, since in mathematics, variables are typically italicized. If you have other questions about using MathType for chemical equations (physical chemistry only -- it doesn't do benzene rings or other structures), feel free to ask here, which is OK if it involves Apple software too, but it makes more sense to write us directly at support at dessci dot com, if the question doesn't have anything to do with Apple products.
