new macbook pro - 1st-time use - charging issues

I got a brand new macbook pro. Figured first thing to do was ensure it is charged. When initially plugging in with mag adapter, LED light was green for about 3 seconds, then turned red. An icon on the screen showed a blinking folder containing a "?". Same thing happens with 3-prong cord. Also, with mag adpater...I noticed it was quickly getting very warm.

so the power aspect was a red herring...I let it charge for awhile and LED turned green. OK. still had the "?" so followed instructions at posting below ...i.e., did the command/R and after a bit, got the globe and request to specify a wireless network. But my home wireless network wasn't one of the ones listed! I am positive there is no issue with my home wireless network being up, because I just connected a windows laptop through it. And all the other wireless network options required a password. So I'm slightly farther along than before, but still in no-man's land. Any ideas?
