Vertical slide bar disappears on Safari

My vertical slide bar has disappeared from Safari and I can only traverse down the page by using Page down (Bar appears and then disappears when I do this). Have restarted to no avail. Any suggestions as to what is going on and fixing the problem would be appreciated. 21" iMac, OS 10.11.3
