The most likely reason for that error screen is a faulty hard drive.  If you already tried doing a Reset (restart) and it goes back to the same error screen, try putting the iPod into Disk Mode

Does the iPod go into Disk Mode?

There is a "recycling" program that gives you 10% off on a new iPod, if you go to an Apple Store.

The currently available new iPod with large storage capacity is iPod touch (up to 128GB).  iPod nano has 16GB.  iPods with hard drive storage are getting old, and the hard drive part is susceptible to wear and damage, so getting one used on eBay has risks.

If your iPod's hard drive is faulty (but it is in good shape otherwise), and you want to repair the iPod, those hard drive parts are no longer being produced.  You can consider replacing it with commonly available flash-based storage in the form of compact flash card or SD card, on an adapter.  This web site has interesting info
