I'm having trouble changing my apple id

I Changed my Apple ID and chose a new password; however, neither my iPad nor my iPhone offers my new id to sign in, they offer my old one which no longer works. I can't figure out how to get my new id on my devices. Help!!

iPhone 6, iOS 9.2.1

1. Forgot iCloud Password

2. Forgot Apple ID

4. Manage your Apple ID primary, rescue, alternate, and notification email addresses - Apple Support

Sign out of the old ID and then in with the new.

It does not allow you to type in the new Apple ID that is the problem! Only allows you to type in a password.

Did you enter the password and then click sign out?
