How long will the iPad 2 last?

How do you know when your iPad is on it's way out? It's the iPad 2, using latest OS 9.2.1. It's slow to respond and sometimes takes 2-3 taps to open an app. Also the touchscreen feature sometimes takes numerous taps before it responds. Restarting does not help.

Many users here are still having great success with their iPad 2 models running the latest iOS. It is nearly impossible to say with any certainty how long a device will last, especially without know all of the details about how you use it every day. I would start with really basic troubleshooting steps and see if that helps performance.

Here are some basic things to try that might help.

Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History and Website Data

Close all apps. Press the Home button two times quickly. You'll see small previews of your recently used apps. Swipe left to find the app you want to close. Swipe up on the app's preview to close it.

Force restart the device. No data is affected by this. To force restart your device, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least ten seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

Something else that can help is to reset all settings. try this. You will not lose any data, but most of the device settings will have to be entered in the settings app again. Settings>General>Reset>Reset all Settings.

If all of that fails, restore the iOS software. Backup your iPad before you restore, then restore the backup when you are done. If that still doesn't help, restore your iPad as new and start all over again. Most purchased content can be downloaded again at no charge as long as you use the same Apple ID and as long as the content is still available in the store.

Thanks, Demo! I tried that clear history/website data to start. Not sure I am tech-savvy enough to try the "reset all settings" tip, though. I have a lot of games and apps I use and don't want to mess them up. Have had my iPad since 2011 so it does get quite a bit of use. But I do not download music or movies so maybe I still have a few years left! Again, thanks!!

Our iPad 2 (32GB wifi only) turns four this month and is quite happy and nimble with the current iOS.

It started to show signs of the battery runtime getting short after iOS9 but, with help of some of the iPad gurus here and Apple Support articles, I figured out to go to Settings and, in the bottom-most section of the left-hand contenct pane, look at settings for each app. I turned off "Background App Refresh" for every app that had the option but where my usage did not require it. Example: I could care less if the YouTube app does background refresh so it's off, but I do need DropBox to refresh, so it's on.

Now the battery runtime is as good as ever--and under iOS 9.

I'm also trying not to let the storage fill up. Ours had grown to having less than 5GB free at some point. I off-loaded to my iMac several GB of images that were simply on-the-road backups of images taken with my DSLR Nikon and were no longer need after safely getting the images transferred to my home computer. Same with videos I'd shot on the iPad and had archived elsewhere. I'd simply grown lazy about managing storage.

Comment: both our iPad 2 and newer iPad Air are much more stable with iOS 9 than iOS 8. Both had serious and aggravating GUI issues with 8. All better now!

Hi again, Donna.

As you have a Mac computer, that off-loading is not difficult. It may not even require "son support." However, "easy" is better achieved by attaching your iPad to the Mac with the iPad's regular cable and launching Image Capture--it is in your Applications folder. After selecting your iPad from Image Capture's left-hand "Devices" pane, you see this on your Mac:

User uploaded file

You can select what images/movies you want to move (note that "IMG_0496 is selected in the screenshot--the gray border) and click the "Import" button (not shown above but it's in the bottom right corner when you see the full screen). If you want to move everything off the iPad to the computer there is an "Import All" button, too.

By default, this will move the selected photos to the Pictures folder on your Mac; you can change the location within Image Capture but the default works for me.
