On my doc, the red dot indicating unread emails, located at the bottom right of the mail icon is gone. How do I get it back?

I have a MacBook Pro about 5 years old, and I just installed El Capitan.

Hello 0622gdwgtr,

I understand you are not seeing the red badge on the Mail Dock icon showing unread mails.

First please check that the Notifications preferences are set to show the Badge app icon in System Preferences > Notifications > Mail.

Notifications preferences - Mac Help

Specify when you don’t want to be disturbed by notifications, and set options to control how apps show notifications and how they’re sorted in Notification Center.

To open Notifications preferences, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Notifications. Select Do Not Disturb or an app on the left, then view or change its settings on the right.

Badge app icon

Let the app show the number of notifications on its icon in the Dock

Then check how Mail is set for the unread mail.

General preferences - Mail Help

Dock unread count

The mailboxes to include in the count of unread messages (the red circle, also called a badge) shown on the Mail icon in the Dock.

The count appears only if “Badge app icon” is selected for Mail in Notifications preferences.

Best regards.
