How to transfer photos

How do I transfer photos (and music) from my old iPod (4th gen) onto my new iPod (5th or 6th gen, I'm not 100% which one it is)? I have many treasured photos and a lot of songs on my old iPod and I'd hate to loose them as I plan on selling it secondhand, so I am desperate to know how can I transfer them from the old device, onto my macbook (the newest version) and onto the new iPod? If anyone can help, I appreciate it so much!!
