Delete an Icon from Launchpad?

I am currently running IOS X El Capitan version 10.11.3 and I am having difficulties deleting unused Icons from Launchpad. I have deleted the applications from my mac but I cannot delete the Icons they have left behind. I have tried making them wiggle by holding down the mouse and clicking the "X" but there IS no "X". Please help!

Hi,

No need to go into your library or tinker launchpad files. The simple solution:

1) Uninstall said program from its folder (Applications folder in my case).

2) If the icon still appears in Launchpad: Start Launchpad. Press (double click/tap) the icon as if opening the program. It should try to load, but since uninstalled it will instead soon show a "?" on it. After this, you can press and hold it and the x icon should show on the top left, allowing you to delete it.

I had a similar problem for 2-3 years on three different laptops, I recall tinkering with the launchpad files as some users suggested. It happened recently on Mac OS Sierra with my Touch Bar MacBook Pro with the old Warcraft III from Blizzard store. Funny how I never thought to actually press (not hold) the icon before. So simple - hope I've helped someone!

Hello Azraeleas,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I see that you are trying to remove an app icon from Launchpad. If you don' t see the 'x' or Delete button when you have gotten them to jiggle, then the app cannot be uninstalled in Launchpad, see the following article: OS X El Capitan: Use Launchpad to view and open apps

Specifically the following section:

Add and remove apps

Add an app to Launchpad: If you want Launchpad to include an app that you didn’t download from the App Store, move the app to the Applications folder in the Finder; the app automatically appears in Launchpad. For more information, see See your files in the Finder.

Add an app to the Dock: Drag the app from Launchpad to the Dock, then drop the app to the left of the Dock’s separator line. The app is in the Dock and in Launchpad.

User uploaded file

Uninstall an app from your Mac: Click and hold an app until all the apps begin to jiggle, then click an app’s Delete button User uploaded file.

If an app doesn’t have a Delete button, it can’t be uninstalled in Launchpad. For more information, see Install, update, and uninstall apps.

Best regards.
