Say I have a folder with many files and subfolders.
How do I count within the folder the number of files and folders separately? Or count the number of total files but exclude the folder count?

Choose Utilities from the Finder’s Go menu, open the Script Editor or AppleScript Editor, and run code such as:

count every file of entire contents of folder “path:to:folder"

Would you by chance have fixed the way to make it into an application where I can drag folders/files for the count?
Try saving the following as an application:

set file_count to count every file of entire contents of this_folder

I get the following message for a folder I made named "0"

Add the following line just below the ‘on open’ one:
set this_folder to item 1 of this_folder

Now there is no error, but the count is wrong. The count of files and the count of folders both come out to be the same. In reality there are only 2 folders and 52 files.
Replace 'set folder_count to count every file of entire contents of this_folder’ with 'set folder_count to count every folder of entire contents of this_folder’.

Works wonderfully now! My last question: when counting folders, can you tell it to include the parent folder in the count? (i.e. the folder that is being dropped into the application)
In the display dialog line, replace ‘folder_count’ with ‘(folder_count + 1)’.
