My phone keeps blocking people on its own. I haven't been able to do an update for. It could this be the issue?

Also what is preventing an update? The max iOS you can get is 7.1.2

The updates never come up on my phone and I don't have a computer to do them.
I was texting the person and then i wasn't receiving messages so went into blocked contacts and there it was. It was very odd. Is this common?
No. It's not common. I don't see how it can even be possible. If you have multiple iOS devices and/or Macs, if you block a contact on one, it will block the contact on all. The phone can't just add people to the blocked list by itself.

Here is what I'm experiencing in full. I will be texting throughout the day and sometimes the phone automatically restarts or the messaging app will close suddenly. When I go back in to text I don't hear anything back from the last person I've messaged. I go into my blocked contacts and there it is. Could it be an iOS software issue?
The fact that the phone is spontaneously rebooting and the messages app is crashing indicates that there is a problem. It could be software, it could be hardware.
Restore iOS and restore your backup.
If that doesn't fix it, restore iOS and set it up as a new phone. Test it. If you still experience crashes, then make an appointment at the genius bar. It's likely a hardware failure.
So the block may be a side effect of the restarts
