Record screen with earphones plugged in

Ok guys, I REALLY need help here! I've been searching for an answer to this issue for days with no luck. First, let me explain what I'm trying to do. I'm making videos (for youtube) of myself playing kids games online. I have been using quick time player which has been working great. My problem is, I need one of two (or even better, BOTH!) solutions to the following problem. My problem is, I have a 2 year old that likes to talk 🙂 while I'm making these screen videos. Is there a way, to record the audio from the game but block out all other noises?

2nd question: I'd also like to be able to make videos while everyone in the house sleeps. Is there a way to record game screen and audio with headphones plugged in? Or any other way where the sound will be recorded but not played out loud. I tried this with quick time player and with headphones plugged in, when I play the video back there is no sound. Please help! Forever grateful to anyone who can answer one or both of these questions. Like seriously, I would buy you donuts if I could ! 🙂

I'm using a MacBook pro. Would also love to know how to do the above things on my iPhone too!

When you record your gameplay with Quicktime Player, by default it is recording the sound of your microphone.

Your microphone is picking up all the sound around you - including the sound produced by your game, and the sound of your 2 year-old.

There are a few tricks you can do with audio on your mac that may help in achieving what you want.

I have just played a bit of QT movie while listening on my headphones, and captured the audio to a new audio recording, so it should work!

One other approach may be to use SoundFlower (which is free). With you install it get new sound input and output options that appear in System Preferences->Sound. Here is part of my Input options in System Preferences:

SoundFlower lets you connect the audio output of one program to the audio input of another.

So if your sound output is Soundflower (2ch) and your sound input is Soundflower (2ch), you can record. But... you won't hear anything!

In comes a little known program that lives in /Applications/Utilities: Audio MIDI Setup.

With it you create two "aggregate devices" - one output device to Soundflower and the built-in output simultaneously, and likewise for input.

Choose those options for your sound input and output and you can play your game with headphones and it will record.

So the problem of recording at night is solved.

It should not be too hard to figure out a way to solve problem number one along similar lines (hint: all you need is to choose a different INPUT option).

There are also some paid applications whose purpose is to digitally intercept the sound your mac produces and record it - two I remember are Audio Hijack and Wiretap Studio.

Hello People,

above does not help me. Task: record in-game sound with QT screen recording, while your headphones are plugged in.

I have created 2 aggregate devices: input - soundflower(2ch) + build-in mic; output - soundflower(2ch) + build-in output.

When I launch QT, i have mic options: nothing; external mic; soundflower(2ch); soundflower(64ch); and one of my aggregate devices: soundflower+input. None of those records in-game sound; second and last one record my voice, which is not a task...

Please advise which settings are done incorrectly.

Thanks in advance!

I did a little experiment here and it worked correctly.

In Audio MIDI Setup, I created one Multi-output device, with: built-in output+Soundflower(2ch)

In Quicktime Player, I created a New Audio Recording, and chose Soundflower(2ch) for its input:

I started to play a video and also spoke to the internal mic. The recording captured the video sound but not my voice, as expected.

I will try later with headphones/external mic (don't have them here at the moment) and see if that makes a difference.
