mail port 993 timeout

Only one of my devices is having this problem - port 993 timeout- can't connect to my IMAP mail server. It will intermittently connect so I know the password etc are correct.

MBP Retina early 2015

OX 10.11.3

Mail 9.2

Settings:

Automatically detect & maintain settings is OFF

IMAP Path Prefix INBOX

Port 993 SSL checked

Authentication Password

Use IDLE command checked

Outgoing TLS certificate None

Automatically detect is off

Port 465 SSL checked

Authentication Password

Of course I've restarted many times. I toggled some of the setting and it didn't get better. Non SSL port settings don't work at all. I've checked with email provider and they can't see anything wrong. I've been trying to clean out the email but with these connection problems it's difficult. Anyway, previous MBP and other devices are working fine.

Anything I can check on this MBP as to why port 993 won't connect?

MacBook, iBook, G3 Desktop, Mac OS X (10.4.10)

The general best way to pursue such problems is to use:

Mail > Window >Connection Doctor

click on the red lights to go directly to the settings affecting the problem Sending or Receiving server. Too much of mail setup pretends those two servers are one. That can work if you get lucky, but if there is a problem, you need the help of Connection Doctor.
