Can I access "Photos" with OS 10.7.5?

Had a crash (hard drive failed) and after expensive recovery and restore, am using OS 10.7.5. But all of my photos in iPhoto are GONE, as is the iPhoto app itself. I am told that Apple switched from iPhoto to Photos recently. Cannot access Photos either. Do I need to upgrade to Mountain LIon 10.10.5 to access Photos? And from there, will I be able to retrieve my iPhoto Library?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

You can re-download iPhoto from your Purchases page in the App Store. However, I cannot help you with your photos. The iPhoto Library should be in your /Home/Pictures/ folder. I assume you did not have a backup, and I hope you will take steps to maintain current backups in the future.

Photos was released with Yosemite. Today you can upgrade to El Capitan but that will not recover your lost photos. The Photos application imports your photos from your then current iPhoto Library.

With each new release of iPhoto, older photo library structures are not necessarily the same. While the individual photos may be accessible with a direct filename search, any added meta data by either Photos or a newer version of iPhoto may not be accessible to 10.7.5

And as mentioned Apple's new Photos App is Yosemite and higher operating systems.
