I have a MAC OS X 10. 6. 3. desktop computer. It has Microsoft Word 2004. The screen froze, the computer shut down and when I restarted it I found I could not get into my Word files. I get the message that I have to move Word back to Microsoft Office folder or the folder it was originally installed. Or reinstall Word to make sure everything is installed correctly. As it has worked fine up until now, I would assume that it is. And I have noooooo idea what they are talking about or where to even start.

Mac OS X (10.6.3)

I can help you with the basics, for sure. You are running Snow Leopard ( I think>), start off by running disk utility and verifying and repairing permissions

from that. After it is done, you can try zapping the PRAM. Reboot computer , hold down command, option, p and R keys all together for 3 bongs (you may have to wait--be patient and keep holding those keys down) then let go and let computer continue booting up. You may have to indeed move MS word back to the MS office folder. It should be in the Applications folder. If in doubt, press command and F, and in the box type in 'office' then hit return and see what that gets you. Offically MS word 2004 isn't supported any more, so you're going to have to do a little look n' see on your own.

here's the archived version of Microsoft's suggestions for Word 2004

that's about all the help I can give you for right now....

good luck to you

Thank you very much for your help, John. I did fine until I came to:

You may have to indeed move MS word back to the MS office folder. It should be in the Applications folder. If in doubt, press command and F, and in the box type in 'office' then hit return and see what that gets you.

When I hit return, it got me nothing. And when I hit the Microsoft Word icon, I still get the same message:

Microsoft Word cannot load the Microsoft Office shared libraries. The files may have been moved from their original locations. Try the following:

Move Word back to the Microsoft Office folder (or the folder where it originally installed and we know I don't have a clue what that folder may be). Reinstall Word to make sure that all the files are installed correctly - which sounds scary to me and since they have been working all these years, highly improbable.

Also, in my applications file, both Microsoft Word and Microsoft Office are highlighted in red. I don't know if this means anything.

You have to remember that you are dealing with someone here that is not at their best when it comes to computer troubleshooting. I don't understand most of the terms to begin with.

If you have any more advice, bring it on!
