Q: Bootcamp Disappeared After new iOS Update

Just come to use Windows again, and it seems that the boot partition has disappeared after updating to the latest iOS.

Are you in Internet Recovery? Another option is to use How to install OS X on an external drive connected to your Mac - Apple Support and create an external bootable OSX. If you get an older version o foSX, upgrade it on the external disk to match the version on the internal disk.

IM just on the command+R recovery from the boot up screen. IF I try and boot, it will ask for my password, i enter it and it starts to load (as if it's finalising the install) but then I get a black screen with the restricted icon display.

I then went into the recovery and tried to install OS X again from scratch, but that only shows me the BootCamp partition and not the OSx partition, which brought me back to this topic as last time it updated, I lost BootCamp. I Don't want to lose any of my files, and I've not got a memory stick big enough, a pretty much only have access to terminal.

Unless what your suggesting is to load OSx on a bootable USB to install that other program?

It would be better leaving the internal disk OSX installation as is, and using an external disk with the same OSX version as the internal disk to boot from, for further diagnosis.

JJust went out and purchased a flash drive big enough and currently installing Sierra on the flash drive now. Am I installing GDisk once I can get in that way?

Right so I've now installed OSx onto the flash drive, and am currently on my laptop running from the flash drive (running slow as ****, but its working - kinda - although I've lost all my apps and documents, as its a fresh install on the drive). So I'll go through the tests I've done previously

    diskutil renameVolume disk0s2 "Macintosh HD"

    and post the output of

    diskutil list

    and check Disk Utility again.

    Morning LonerT,

    I get the following:

    Jamess-MacBook-Pro:~ jamessimpson$ diskutil renameVolume disk0s2 "Macintosh HD"

    Volume must be mounted

Then I tried to mount it:

    Jamess-MacBook-Pro:~ jamessimpson$ diskutil mount /dev/disk0s2

Volume on disk0s2 failed to mount

If the volume is damaged, try the "readOnly" option

Do you have a backup of OSX that can be restored? The restore does not change non-OSX files.

No i dont, but as long as i can get my files and apps back, it doesnt matter about the OSX settings and things.

I have a feeling that I'll have to format that partition and start over? I have bought a external hard drive too so backups will be taken via Time Machine from now on, but would like to get my apps and files back if possible.

If the external disk (one you plan to use for TM backups) has enough disk space, run a dd and dump the contents of disk0s2 to a file on this disk.

Once it is complete, use Command+R to boot Local Recovery of your external OSX disk. Assuming it matches the version of OSX on your internal disk, re-install OSX to the internal disk partition, without erasing it. It should preserve all your non-OS files.
