My cursor keeps turning into the clock

My cursor keeps changing into the running clock. Its OK as I move it, back to arrow. Then after a few seconds changes to the running clock. Back to arrow cursor then back to running clock. Over and over. A restart seemed to stop it for a while. Now it is happening again. Standard applications are running. Most of Adobe Creative Suite, Firefox, Mail, Quark, Suitcase.
