Can't find apps to run on my 1st Generation iPad

I have bought a second hand iPad on E Bay but didn't realise that virtually nothing in the apps store works on its iOS 5.1.1 !

Is there anything I can do about that ?

iPad, iOS 5.1.1

That's what I was afraid of but was hoping that there was a way of updating. However, after playing with the iPad (I'm used to Android devices) I have found that I can save web pages to the Home screen so I can still use iPlayer, You Tube etc but not in the tablet friendly format. Better than nothing I suppose.

Thanks for replying though and confirming my worst fears.

Apps may have compatible versions for a forts Generation iPad.

To get compatible versions you'll need to first download the app you want to iTunes in a computer.

Once the App has been downloaded, go into the iPad and try to donwload it from the Purchased section of the app Store, if there is one available you should be offered the compatible version.

Attempts to download direct from the store resulted in messages saying that that app required an iOS version later than the one I had. I tried the various TV apps, Kindle, word games, photo editing and art/drawing ones amongst others I eventually selected at random just to find something!

Following your advice I went to iTunes on my laptop and 'bought' (they were free) a couple of basic games - Hangman and Scrabble. Returning to the iPad I went to Purchased Apps and tried to install them. The install button was 'greyed out' and didn't respond. In the list of compatible iOSs my version 5.1.1 wasn't mentioned.

There are scores of 1st generation iPad for sale on EBay - surely others have this problem? The iPad is fine for the internet and emailing, but I can use my laptop or Kindle Fire for that. I'm really disappointed. 😟

I've contacted Apple support to complain and see if I get any joy there.

This link should search for apps whose current version requires iOS 5.1.1 or lower (from https://sites.google.com/site/appleclubfhs/support/advice-and-articles/finding-a pps-for-older-devices#5.1.1) : https://www.google.co.uk/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=site:itunes.apple.com/gb/ +%22requires+ios+2.0%7C2.1%7C2.2%7C3.0%7C3.1%7C3.2%7C4.0%7C4.1%7C4.2%7C4.3%7C5.0 %7C5.1%22&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&gfe_rd=cr&ei=j_XfVqXfH-GP8Qf_wIjwDQ

For those apps that you've 'bought' on your computer's iTunes so that they are in your purchase history, if the developer supports downloading of older versions of their app (and iOS 5.1.1), when tapping on the app in Purchased in the App Store app you should see something like the following :

If the apps are greyed out in Purchased then do those apps have an age rating, and if so have you blocked that age via Settings > General > Restrictions ?

Heartfelt thanks for all the advice and informative links. While still very restricted to just a few apps, I do have some useful ones now. The iTunes tip was the key. I hadn't even realised that you could download apps from there.

It was also interesting to learn that you are sometimes offered the compatible version when you get to the installation stage so I now have Kindle and Scrabble!

Thanks again!
